Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: We all probably have multiple WiPs, but which of yours has been hanging around longest, waiting to be finished?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

sinesofinsanity: Because Batcow (Batcow)
[personal profile] sinesofinsanity posting in [community profile] fancake
Fandom: DC, technically the Justice League (2017) movie, but can reasonably fit with most DC timelines
Pairings/Characters: Martha Kent, Atlanna
Rating: T
Length: 2,909 words
Creator Links: susiecarter
Theme: Female Relationships, Female Friendship, Gen, Minor Characters, Superpowers

Summary: There's a very unusual woman on the train, when Martha boards just outside Metropolis.

Reccer's Notes: I love depictions of Martha Kent where she is no-nonsense and kind, but ultimately human. She is out of her depth in the superhero shenanigans but perfectly suited to handle any and all human things before and after. I love how she immediately clocks Atlanna as "strange and possibly dangerous" and so decides to strike up a conversation. It's lovely to see these two women bond over their sons even before they really know who each other is. Also Alfred cameos at the end which is always fun.

It's time for some NYC-picking!

Now, I've already told you about the alleys (no alleys in Manhattan) and right on red (none of that either), and now it's time for - garbage.

Since the 1990s it's been the law that residential garbage in NYC has to have the recyclables sorted out. And since this year we also have to separate out the compost, though weirdly they only pick that up once a week, I've complained about this. It's completely backwards.

Anyway, as I said, it's been the law since the 90s that you can't put your cans and bottles in with your regular trash. Do people always follow that law? Oh, heck no. But if you don't and the city catches you at it they'll give you a $300 ticket, and if you don't pay they put a lien on the house. So even if you don't care, your landlord might, and if they care and perhaps only have one tenant at that location you can bet they won't just eat the cost.

And if your protagonist is even minimally conscientious she'll at least glance around for a recycle bin before tossing her water bottle in with the regular trash.

(As a reference here, our terrible neighbors, who have had sanitation and once the fire department called on them multiple times due to the trash they pile up in their yard, still separate out the bottles and cans from the regular trash. Though in their case they may somewhat optimistically believe they'll get around to redeeming them one of these days, honestly, who knows how they think.)

This rant is courtesy of Elsbeth, which Jenn has been watching. Sure, Elsbeth is a snoop and the best way to dispose of several bushels worth of murderous apple pulp was probably to flush it, but all the same - it's weird that such a generally responsible character goes straightaway to throw out her water bottle in the general trash in somebody's house without at least checking that there's no recycle bin.

WTF even is this?

Currently amusing myself with the notion of a System Failure AU, in which Shen Yuan still gets transmigrated into SQQ as usual, and has access to and can argue with the System, but someone else also has access to his System logs, and they're the one that gets to call the shots.

So it'd be a closer experience to a video game or visual novel for the other person, just that SY!SQQ has a bit more agency when it comes to getting the System to do what he wants than a player character might have.

Amusing options for which character gets control:
  • Ning Yingying; she gets a wakeup call about her own social fuckups, especially regarding Luo Binghe, but also gets an insight into what happened to SJ!SQQ, what he was doing to and planning for LBH, etc
  • Shang Qinghua; he hates dealing with his own System, and now he has a second one to contend with?! And it's somehow nicer than his own?! WTF is this bullshit! (Early Airplane reveal for extra shenanigans)
  • Liu Qingge; just for the sheer WTF factor involved. He would have no idea what was going on, and figuring it out, as well as everything else involved, would be... very interesting, IMO.
  • Yue Qingyuan; there would have to be some way of rigging it so he'd get Shen Jiu back if he managed to "help" Shen Yuan "fix" PIDW, or he'd probably find a way to be self-destructive about it and/or kill SY!SQQ or something
  • Luo Binghe; honestly, probably the least interesting option of the ones I listed so far. He would be better with just System chat log access, not decision making access, IMO. Still, he is an option!
  • Ming Fan, probably; I've already got NYY on the list, so why not? He can start learning about the consequences of bullying LBH and maybe start thinking about what it means to be a righteous cultivator
  • Gongyi Xiao; I mean, if I put Ming Fan on there, I may as well. He has no idea what's going on for most of this, except for a passing familiarity with the Xiu Ya sword, and is now going to get an inside look at how dysfunctional all the cultivation sects are, HHP included

  • Of these, I think that NYY and/or YQY are the two I'm most likely to actually write (GYX is tempting, but I've got the start of a fix-it AU thing already kinda planned for Sot69), but even then I can't imagine doing more than an outline at the moment. Still, very amusing to think about!

Name: SetNox1, or Kai if you prefer a 'proper' name.

    Age: 20.

I mostly post about: Not sure yet but probably whatever's on my mind at the time. Daily life, insights, events, ideas, not in any specific order. Don't expect anything too shocking though. Inside thoughts should stay inside or in a paper journal at most.

My hobbies are: Dungeons & Dragons, drawing, maybe writing if you're generous with vague periphery interests that stuck around for months. I'm trying to get into sewing and other clothing DIY shenanigans.

My fandoms are: None. Maybe Percy Jackson if you count lurking in the art/headcanons corner of Tumblr as participating in a fandom.

I'm looking to meet people who: Share snippets of their mind and life and enjoy exchanging music recommendations. Seriously, send me songs, I love exploring new artists, especially the smaller/independent ones.

My posting schedule tends to be: Probably sporadic. Knowing myself, I'll try to keep a regular schedule, then forget about the schedule, then have a big buildup of stuff to say but can't find the words for them, and when things finally click int place I'll share a crap ton. I love my executive functionality (cue lightheartedly sarcastic sigh).

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: Focus on sexual stuff and gore. I don't mind them in small doses but god forbid it becomes the main point of conversation. Also, ny form of queerphobia! Pardon my English but you're not 'phobic' or 'scared' of anything, you're just a douche, or raised by one at best.

Before adding me, you should know: I overanalyse quite a lot behind the scenes, possibly because of something neurodivergent that I've not yet discovered. For the same reason I might come across as plain or sarcastic eve when I don't intend to. Whoops. I'm also a very queer soul. Go enjoy your life without me if you're looking for a neurotypical, cishet-normative experience.

Deadloch: Horsehair by pint pot Judas

    Fandom: Deadloch
    Characters/Pairings: Eddie Redcliffe/Dulcie Collins
    Rating: Teen
    Length: 2518
Content Notes: Internalised homophobia, unreliable narrator, political correctness and Eddie aren't even in the same universe
    Creator Links: pintpotjudas on AO3
Themes: Female relationships, Backstory, Ambiguous relationships

Summary: Just Eddie, musing on hair. And lesbians. And herself, a bit. (She's meant to be thinking about the case.)
Set in a lull (???) in episode five, or thereabouts.

Reccer's Notes: The detective partnership of Eddie and Dulcie is central to Deadloch, and it's "enemies to friends" in canon, but with a tantalising hint of maybe-polyamory at the very end of the show. In this story, Eddie thinks about lesbians in general (Deadloch's full of lesbians), her odd fascination with Dulcie's long, thick, hair, and remembers a female friendship from her teens. It's a believable character study where we understand a bit more about Eddie and see the beginnings of her attraction to Dulcie, even if Eddie's still mostly in denial. Interesting, and well written, with great characterisation and Eddie's usual hilarious and colourful turns of phrase.

    What I've Read
    Murderbot Diaries 2-4
(narrated by the wonderful Kevin R. Free ) - After last week, I went on a binge and re-read all the audiobooks: Artificial Condition, Rogue Protocol, Exit Strategy

By my count, this is the third time thru most of these books and they really truly do hold up. Incredibly keenly observed stories of Murderbot encountering people, making observations, and (against its will!) feeling things about them. It's so good.

Highlights: In Artificial Condition, meeting ART but also realizing about getting to have CHOICES and how that changes the relationship to its clients. In Rogue Protocol, being so jealous of the 'pet robot' Miki and how it gets to have people take care of it and that's not beneath contempt. In Exit Strategy, it's the line, "Please. They will kill her."

Lent by Jo Walton - I went into those novel knowing nothing and it just has blown me away. This book cannot be discussed truly without massive spoilers but it is so good I want to shove people at it anyways. I went in knowing basically nothing about it, so was incredibly impressed by the way the book unfolded and I do not want to take that away from anyone. So, I will give you what will not spoil it - this book treats Christian beliefs of the middle ages as hard fact and works from there to show a character trying to live a moral and meaningful life even tho he knows that he may be damned. The characters are so fucking good. I finished it this afternoon and I am going to have to re-read it again soon.

    What I'm Reading
Fugitive Telemetry - Martha Wells, Narrated by Kevin R Free ( I know this is technically out of publication order , but I prefer it.)

Hunting Toward Heartstill by Blackkat -about 45%
The Antarctica Conspiracy Derin Edala – slightly on hold.
The Ministry of time - on hold.

Welp, I just totally phoned in a Speech class assignment.

On the other hand, I both more-or-less completed it and turned it in, so that's a win over my ability to deal with ADHD in high school. I'll take it.

For real, tho, the assignment was bonkers to do in just one week. On top of that, my lifestyle doesn't really lend itself well to the assignment itself, so uh. Well, just take a look )

Anyway, I ended up trying to improve my listening strategy for Intro to Philosophy. It, uh. Well, it helped me more-or-less finish the assignment! And a finished and turned in assignment is, once again, leagues better than a completely ignored assignment that never gets turned in. So I'm taking the win.

Edit: Tonight's class included an exercise for extra credit worth 10 points, which is 2/3 of the above assignment! That should balance things out for me.
